Former independent presidential candidate Evan McMullin slammed President-elect Donald Trump late Sunday for appointing former Breitbart executive Stephen Bannon as his chief strategist.

“Saying ‘stop it’ to racist attacks means little when you name white supremacist darling Steve Bannon chief strategist in the very same day,” McMullin wrote on Twitter.

{mosads}In an interview with “60 Minutes” broadcast on Sunday, Trump responded to reports of racist comments made about minorities since he was elected by telling his supporters to “stop it.”

Trump announced Sunday that Bannon, the chief executive officer of his campaign, along with Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus, would serve in the White House. Bannon previously served as the chairman of the Breitbart News website.

McMullin ran as an independent against Trump, with the backing of establishment conservatives looking for an alternative to the GOP nominee.

Republicans on Twitter congratulated Priebus on the appointment, while some criticized Trump for making Bannon one of his top aides.
