Rep. Gary Peters (D-Mich.) is so cheap he wears a hole-filled sweatshirt and hasn’t replaced his washing machine in more than a decade.
That’s not an attack from his Republican opponent, Terri Lynn Land, in Michigan’s Senate race — that’s a brag from Peters in his newest ad.
“The way I was brought up, you don’t spend money you don’t have,” Peters says in the ad, going on to tout his fiscal responsibility in office.
{mosads}His ad is the latest example of a pervasive trend on the campaign trail this cycle: candidates — often featuring their families as messengers — touting their frugality at home as evidence they’ll bring those same values to the House or Senate.
At a time when voters rate the national debt as a top concern and are tightening their own belts, it’s no longer shameful to be a cheapskate — at least not on the campaign trail.
