Actress Susan Sarandon, a Bernie Sanders supporter, is worried that the complex rules of Nevada’s caucuses will cause problems for voters.
“I’m so begging you to be tough during these caucuses and to know your rights and know how it works,” Sarandon told a crowd of Sanders supporters in Las Vegas, according to BuzzFeed News. “Because I can’t figure it out.
{mosads}“This is so complicated as far as I’m concerned,” she continued, adding that “democracy’s messy.”
“But everybody eat ahead of time, apparently. Don’t let your blood sugar drop,” she joked.
On the heels of the chaotic Iowa caucuses, which were perceived to be decided by a series of coin flips, sources familiar with both Sanders’ and rival Hillary Clinton’s campaigns told BuzzFeed they are afraid of dirty tricks ahead of Saturday’s Nevada caucuses.
The Sanders camp has been accused of recruiting Republicans to change their registrations and vote against the former secretary of State.
“They are the ones inviting Republicans,” an unnamed source familiar with the Clinton operation in the state said.
And the Sanders campaign has established an “election protection program” consisting of attorneys and a hotline for precinct captains in case anything goes awry.
“You could see that there were a lot of concerns and even some conspiracy theories about what happened in Iowa, and this is the best way to avoid that type of situation and ensure the legitimacy of the process,” Chris Newman, a lawyer who is going to Las Vegas to monitor polls, told BuzzFeed.
Longtime Nevada political operative Andres Ramirez, who is a superdelegate and has endorsed Clinton, called the Sanders strategy “bizarre.”
“I think the Bernie people are so unaware, so inept about how this caucus works, that they’re going to go and try to create chaos,” he told BuzzFeed.
