Sanders hammers Clinton on Iraq, Wall Street
Democratic presidential hopeful Bernie Sanders is unloading on rival Hillary Clinton, targeting her past support of the Iraq War and connections to Wall Street.
Sanders had previously refrained from naming Clinton in his broadsides, but he wasn’t shy about attacking the former secretary of State in Chicago on Thursday.
{mosads}“I do not receive many millions of dollars from Wall Street or the pharmaceutical industry or other powerful, wealthy interests in this country and have not given speeches for hundreds of thousands of dollars to Wall Street,” Sanders said, according to The Washington Post.
During his speech, Sanders was briefly interrupted after he was charged by a woman holding a sign. Secret Service stepped in and eventually escorted the woman out of the venue.
On the heels of his second-place finish in the Nevada caucuses, Sanders referenced Clinton’s support for the Iraq War, saying the Bush administration misled the public in order to justify the war.
“I didn’t believe them,” he said. “I voted against the war. My opponent, Secretary Clinton, voted for the war.”
The Vermont senator also brought up Clinton’s past opposition to gay rights, pointing to her support of the Defense of Marriage Act, which he called a “homophobic piece of legislation.”
“Secretary Clinton supported it,” he said.
Polls show Clinton with a formidable lead in Saturday’s South Carolina Democratic primary.
