Clinton wins Kentucky primary recanvass

Hillary Clinton is the unofficial winner of the Kentucky Democratic presidential primary after a recanvass of results, Kentucky Secretary of State Alison Grimes announced Thursday.

{mosads}Bernie Sanders’s campaign earlier this week asked Kentucky officials to review the votes from last week’s primary after the results showed Clinton beating Sanders by just half a percentage point.

The recanvass began Thursday morning. The State Board of Elections will certify the results on May 31 at 10 a.m., Grimes tweeted.

“The unofficial winner of Kentucky’s Democratic presidential primary remains Hillary Clinton,” Grimes said at the press conference on Thursday, according to Politico

“The recanvass vote totals which were submitted to my office today will become the official vote totals.”

On the night of the election, the unofficial vote count showed Clinton beating Sanders by 1,924 votes. After the recanvass, Clinton remained in the lead but by 1,911 votes.

“The 13-vote difference is a result of two counties’ absentee vote totals being reported, as well as provisional ballots in two counties being reported,” Grimes said.

The Sanders campaign had asked for a recanvass — a review of voting tallies on electronic voting machines and absentee ballots from each of the state’s 120 counties — rather than a recount.
