GOP’s Scalise on fundraising tear

House Majority Whip Steve Scalise (La.) is on a fundraising tear, hauling in $3.6 million for congressional Republicans so far this year.

That figure includes his three fundraising vehicles, money directly raised for other Republicans and transfers to the National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC).

Members of leadership are expected to bring in large sums of cash for the party. Scalise, who was elevated to chief vote-counter for House Republicans after former Rep. Eric Cantor’s (R-Va.) surprise primary defeat last year, has been working to solidify his position with an aggressive fundraising schedule.

Combined, his joint fundraising committee, campaign account and leadership PAC, Eye of the Tiger, established record fundraising numbers for a whip during the first three months of 2015, pulling in $1.5 million. That number, however, did not include the money Scalise raised for other candidates.

He came close to matching that figure in the last quarter as well, pulling in $1.2 million for himself and the NRCC from April to June.

The Louisiana Republican, who still has nearly $1.4 million left in the bank at his committees, raised more than $500,000 for his GOP colleagues during the last quarter after holding more than two-dozen campaign events around the country and in Washington, D.C.

House Republicans are amassing massive campaign accounts as they seek to preserve their historic majority in the 2016 elections.

“When we go on the road, we’re saying, invest in the team,” said Tyler Daniel, political director at the Scalise Leadership Fund. “Now more than ever this leadership team is strong and willing to do whatever to make sure the conference has the resources they need to keep winning.”

During the August congressional recess alone, Scalise has planned a 15-stop fundraising tour for members and candidates that spans from California to Maine to Florida, and everywhere in between. He’ll also be hosting several receptions for his colleagues in Washington.

House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) has brought in $9 million for Republicans so far this year, while Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) raised $28 million during the same period, according to preliminary reports by Politico.
