Former Virginia governor will reportedly run for president
Former Virginia Gov. Jim Gilmore will jump into the overflowing Republican presidential race, according to the Richmond Times-Dispatch.
Gilmore said he’ll announce the first week in August.
{mosads}With GOP Govs. Scott Walker (Wis.) and John Kasich (Ohio) expected to launch their bids later this month, Gilmore would be the 17th candidate in the Republican field. He’d also enter as one of the least-known candidates, miles behind the front-runners.
Gilmore served one term as governor, from 1998 until 2002, leaving because of the state’s one-term limit. He then spent a year as the Republican National Committee chairman.
Gilmore said during a radio interview in March he has strong qualifications to serve as president, thanks to his gubernatorial career and his service on the National Commission of Homeland Security.
It would not be his first bid for president. He ran in 2007 for six months before dropping out due to a lack of fundraising and later ran for Senate in that same cycle, losing to now-Sen. Mark Warner (D-Va.) by more than 30 percentage points.
