Trump overtakes Cruz in final Iowa poll
Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump just got some good news two days before his campaign’s biggest day.
Trump leads the GOP field with 28 percent support in Iowa, according a Des Moines Register/Bloomberg poll released Saturday evening.
{mosads}The results come just days before the Iowa caucuses on Monday, where Trump’s ability to turn out voters will be put to the test.
Rival Ted Cruz comes in second with 23 percent.
Cruz led the previous version of the poll released Jan. 13 with 25 percent, with Trump behind him at 22 percent.
Marco Rubio came in third place with 15 percent, and Ben Carson in fourth with 10 percent.
Rand Paul follows with 5 percent. Chris Christie has 3 percent, and Jeb Bush, Carly Fiorina, Mike Huckabee, John Kasich and Rick Santorum have 2 percent each.
Trump also has the edge over Cruz in both firm and likely caucus-goers.
About 30 percent who “definitely plan on attending” Monday’s vote back the business mogul, versus 26 percent for Cruz.
And 27 percent of those who will “probably attend” are in Trump’s corner, compared with 21 percent for Cruz.
“Trump is leading with both the inner core of the caucus universe and the fringe – that’s what any candidate would want,” said veteran Iowa pollster J. Ann Selzer, who conducted the survey.
Selzer & Co. conducted The Des Moines Register/Bloomberg poll of 602 likely GOP caucus-goers from Jan. 26-29. It has a 4 percent margin of error.
A Trump victory in Monday’s first-in-the-nation vote could boost the real estate tycoon’s legitimacy in later contests.
He leads Cruz by nearly 7 points in the Hawkeye State, according to a RealClearPolitics average of surveys.
