Rubio campaign preparing for contested convention: report
Marco Rubio’s presidential campaign is preparing for the possibility of a contested Republican National Convention, CNN reported Thursday.
Campaign adviser Terry Sullivan discussed the plan at a closed-door meeting in Manhattan on Wednesday night, according to CNN.
{mosads}Sullivan said Rubio still thinks it’s possible to secure the delegates needed to sew up the nomination before the convention.
He also said the campaign is ready for a scenario in which none of the candidates have won the delegates needed before the convention. Sullivan explained details of how a brokered convention would work.
Attendees told CNN that Sullivan laid out both paths.
“One is somebody — Trump or Rubio — wins enough primaries to sew up the nomination in advance of the convention,” one attendee said. “The other is that nobody does, and the two candidates go to the convention.”
GOP presidential front-runner Donald Trump has been polling ahead of the field in most states voting in next week’s Super Tuesday contests on March 1.
Trump is also ahead of Rubio by a large margin in his home state of Florida, according to a poll released Thursday.
