Coburn throws support behind Rubio
Former Oklahoma Sen. Tom Coburn (R) is backing Marco Rubio’s presidential bid, the latest in a stampede of lawmakers coming to the Florida senator’s aid.
“At a time when our republic, and the Republican Party, is at a crossroads I have no doubt that the right choice for America is Marco Rubio,” Coburn said in a statement put out by the Rubio campaign.
{mosads}”America desperately needs a president who will appeal to people’s highest aspirations rather than their deepest fears; a president who will model servant leadership rather than self-promotion; and a president who will cast a vision and unite the country instead of denigrating dissenters as second-class citizens. Marco would be such a president.”
The nod comes one day before Super Tuesday, when Oklahoma and 10 other states will hold primaries to award about a quarter of the race’s outstanding delegates. Trump, who is leading in many of those states, is poised to expand his delegate lead.
Known in Washington for his aggressive work to cut spending and for his willingness to buck the party’s establishment, Coburn pushed back on the notion that Trump is the solution to frustrations with the status quo.
“Donald Trump’s campaign is a fabrication. He is perpetuating a fraud on the American people. His empty promises, bullying and bloviating rhetoric will only deepen the frustration and disillusionment that gave rise to his campaign. He simply lacks the character, skills and policy knowledge to turn his grandiose promises into reality,” Coburn said.
“Put simply, Donald Trump has no plan to make America great again. He is a populist without portfolio.”
The former senator’s endorsement comes as Rubio cleans up with endorsements from current lawmakers. He’s won 57 congressional endorsements, more than double that of Ted Cruz.
