GOP presidential front-runner Donald Trump’s daughter, Ivanka, says she failed to register to vote for her dad in the New York primary because of the state’s “onerous rules.”
“I’m an independent, and I’ve always voted based on the candidate, as opposed to based on the party. And it was actually a very interesting experience,” Ivanka said Tuesday night during a CNN town hall, appearing with the Trump family.
{mosads}”New York has one of the most onerous rules in terms of registration, and it required us to register a long time ago, almost — close to a year ago. And we didn’t do that. We found out about it sort of after the fact,” she continued.
Ivanka Trump, 34, and her brother Eric Trump, 32, did not register to vote for New York’s closed primary April 19, which requires voters be registered Republicans to vote. Trump himself earlier this week knocked the “unfair” rules, saying his kids felt “very, very guilty.”
Ivanka, who has made nearly a half-dozen campaign videos in recent months speaking about the importance of registering to vote, said Tuesday night that her own experience spurred her making the videos.
“It was our first, kind of, foray into politics. We didn’t realize how the whole system worked,” Eric Trump said on CNN of not registering to vote, noting, “There’s no one that’s been more visible on the campaign than the two of us.
“It actually was a great educational process for us, and one that probably helped the campaign a lot.”
