Dem becomes RI’s first woman governor
Democrat Gina Raimondo became the first woman to be elected as governor of Rhode Island on Tuesday.
Raimondo, 43, has served as the state’s treasurer since 2010. She beat Republican challenger Allan Fung, 44, the mayor of Cranston.
{mosads}Raimondo will replace retiring Gov. Lincoln Chafee.
Raimondo won 40.2 percent of the vote to Fung’s 36.3 percent. Robert Healey garnered 22.1 percent of the vote.
President Obama, first lady Michelle Obama and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton had campaigned for Raimondo, while New Jersey Governor Chris Christie had campaigned for Fung.
