GOP expected to hold record number of governorships

Republicans are expected to pick up as many as three governorships in the wake of the GOP’s stunning wave Tuesday.

{mosads}GOP candidates emerged victorious in Missouri, New Hampshire and Vermont — all three states that were previously held by Democrats.

Democrats still stand to pick up one seat. The party’s hopes are now entirely resting on North Carolina, which remains in a dead heat as of about 4 a.m. on Wednesday.

Even without North Carolina, Republicans are poised to elect a record number of gubernatorial candidates. The party’s previous record in the modern political era was 32 governorships, according to Governing Magazine.

Republicans previously held 31 governorships, with 18 for the Democrats.

Democrats are expected to hold onto the governor’s mansion in four states: Delaware, Oregon, Washington and West Virginia.
