Oprah to fundraise for Va. candidate

Oprah Winfrey is slated to headline a fundraiser in April for Democrat Lavern Chatman in Virginia’s 8th Congressional District.

Chatman, the former president and CEO of the Northern Virginia Urban League, is running in a crowded primary to replace retiring Rep. Jim Moran (D-Va.) in his heavily Democratic district.

{mosads}Chatman branded the fundraiser as a momentum boost for the campaign. It will take place April 5 in Arlington, Va.

“To win a race like this, you need a lot of support and a strong grass roots effort,” she said. “Our campaign is off to a tremendous start. We have inspired new volunteers and re-engaged many voters.”

Chatman described Oprah as a “good friend” and said the two are both involved in furthering female leadership.

“I’m delighted she is coming to town to help with my congressional campaign,” she said.

The race to replace Moran has attracted nearly a dozen Democrats for the June 10 primary. Chatman’s campaign said it has so far brought in $200,000. The winner of the primary will likely become Moran’s replacement. President Obama won the district with 68 percent of the vote.
