House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) is going up with his first television ad since 2010.
{mosads}The ad, according to a Boehner aide, is a “man on the street” spot and is running across the district for the next two weeks.
Boehner’s campaign spokesman Cory Fritz said the buy was intended to engage voters in Ohio to take advantage of a favorable political climate for Republicans.
“Republicans have a big opportunity in 2014, and the Speaker wants to make the most of it,” he said. “With no significant statewide primary to mobilize and engage voters in Ohio, we’re stepping up and doing our part to build a strong foundation for victory up and down the ticket in November.”
Compared to 2012, when Ohio was a presidential battleground and a hotbed of political activity, there’s not as much campaigning going on, as the gubernatorial race has been largely uneventful thus far.
Boehner’s ad is aimed at getting voters to tune in to politics.
But he’s also facing three Republicans in the primary, one of whom has been endorsed by the Tea Party Leadership Fund, which spent $25,000 on a campaign against Boehner earlier this year. Boehner also faced primary challengers in 2010, and aired television and radio ads that cycle as well.
He is, however, expected to sail easily through the May 6 primary, as he did in the Republican wave year of 2010.
