AP ‘uncalls’ Wisconsin primary race
A GOP primary race in Wisconsin’s 6th Congressional District is now too close to call, The Associated Press said Wednesday after it declared the winner the night earlier.
The AP “uncalled” the race Wednesday, according to ABC News Milwaukee affiliate WISN, after it said state Sen. Glenn Grothman won the GOP nomination.
{mosads}A recount in Sheboygan County narrowed Grothman’s lead to only 214 votes against state Sen. Joe Leibham, who came in second place. Grothman has received 23,241 votes and Leibham has received 23,027, according to a tally by the Milwaukee Wisconsin Journal-Sentinel.
The AP said it redacted its decision because of the close margin.
Both Republicans are running to replace Rep. Tom Petri (R-Wis.), who is retiring at the end of the year. State Rep. Duey Stroebel came in third place and former instructor Tom Denow came in fourth.
If Grothman ultimately wins the GOP nomination, Democrats could have a better chance in November at winning the Republican-leaning district. Grothman is incredibly conservative, especially on social issues.
President Obama narrowly won the district in 2008, but lost by 7 percentage points in 2012.
