Two polls show tightening race for Tierney’s seat in Mass.

Two new polls show a tight race for Rep. John Tierney’s (D-Mass.) seat, with Republican Richard Tisei reversing an early lead by Democrat Seth Moulton.

{mosads}The latest survey, out Wednesday from Emerson College, gives Tisei a 2-point lead over Moulton, with 41 percent support to Moulton’s 39 percent support among likely voters.

That’s a reversal from two surveys out earlier this month for groups supporting Moulton that showed the Democrat holding a solid single-digit lead on Tisei.

The Republican appears to be overcoming the blue lean of the district because he draws greater enthusiasm from his supporters. Half of his supporters said they were enthusiastic about the race, compared to about a third of Moulton supporters who said the same.

The Emerson College polling memo suggests the strong enthusiasm from Republicans is due, in part, to the prospect of flipping the district for the first time in a decade and a half. But Moulton might also be experiencing just middling enthusiasm from Democrats because some former Tierney supporters are reportedly still wary of the Democrat, who beat the incumbent in a primary.

While Moulton is believed to have a better shot at taking down Tisei because he’s free of much of Tierney’s personal baggage and long tenure in Washington, the Democrat appears to still have some work to do to make sure his voters turn out this fall.

The Emerson College automated survey was conducted Sept. 26-29 among 429 likely voters and has a margin of error of 4.7 points.

It aligns with an internal poll conducted among 400 likely voters Sept. 23-25 by the Tarrance Group for Tisei’s campaign, which showed him leading Moulton by 1 point, taking 41 percent to Moulton’s 40 percent support among likely voters. That’s within the poll’s 4.9-percent margin of error.
