Michael Douglas endorses in Maryland House race

Actor Michael Douglas is lending his star power to a contender in a multi-candidate Democratic primary for Maryland’s 8th Congressional District.

Douglas announced Thursday he is backing former Deputy Assistant Secretary of State Joel Rubin in the struggle for the House seat.

“Joel Rubin is a proven fighter for progressive values who will deliver results for Maryland’s Eight Congressional District,” he said in a statement obtained by The Hill.

{mosads}“I’ve seen Joel in action, building broad support for a foreign policy that creates a better, safer world for future generations,” Douglas added. “That’s the kind of leadership our country needs now more than ever.

“In Joel, we’ll have a member of Congress who understands our country’s challenges, from America’s role in the world to how to make our economy work again for ordinary Americans. I strongly endorse his run for Congress.”

Rubin thanked Douglas, a longtime political activist, for supporting him after exploring his domestic and foreign policy credentials.

“I am deeply honored and humbled by Michael’s support for my candidacy,” he said of the “Wall Street” performer.

“His leadership in seeking a world without nuclear weapons, dedication to Jewish values and efforts to advance peace and humanitarian initiatives both abroad and here at home are truly inspiring. I look forward to working in Congress on behalf of Maryland’s Eight Congressional District in pursuit of our shared commitment to progressive values.”

Douglas’s endorsement of Rubin follows similar support from Rep. Jan Schakowsky (D-Ill.) and several progressive advocacy organizations.

Rubin has also received the backing of J Street, a liberal group lobbying for peaceful resolution to the Israel-Palestine conflict. He additionally touts support from the Council for a Livable World, an advocacy organization seeking the elimination of nuclear weapons.

Rubin is one of eight Democrats competing in the primary; Republicans have five declared candidates.

Rep. Chris Van Hollen (D-Md.) announced last year he is vacating the seat so he can seek Sen. Barbara Mikulski’s (D-Md.) Senate spot once she retires in 2017.
