Liz Cheney wins Wyoming House primary
Liz Cheney is projected to win the GOP primary for Wyoming’s at-large House seat.
Cheney, former Vice President Dick Cheney’s eldest daughter and a former State Department aide, faced seven other challengers in the primary to replace retiring Rep. Cynthia Lummus (R-Wyo.).
{mosads}The victory is a political comeback for Cheney, who mounted a brief primary challenge to Sen. Mike Enzi (R-Wyo.) in 2014.
She was heavily criticized for moving to the state shortly before announcing her run, and for going after a popular Republican. She ended her campaign several months before the primary.
Cheney significantly outpaced her competitors in fundraising, and led the race in a July poll.
Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) made a surprising last-minute endorsement of state Sen. Leland Christensen (R), one of Cheney’s opponents in the primary.
Cheney will be heavily favored to win the November general election for the seat her father once held for 10 years.
The seat has been in GOP hands since 1978.
