Republican incumbent David Valadao on Tuesday was projected to win a third House term, hanging on to his seat in California’s 21st Congressional District.
Valadao, who defeated Democrat Emilio Huerta, had been considered one of the most vulnerable incumbents in California.
{mosads}Valadao renounced Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump early and has been able to keep his reelection campaign focused on local issues, including the California’s drought and water shortage.
“No matter what I do, what event I do, if it’s a tele-town hall, if it’s a door-knock, doesn’t matter where I’m at, water is the first thing you hear about,” Valadao said in an interview according to news reports.
Heading into the election the district was considered a toss up by the Cook Political Report.
Valadao has added amendments to several bills that he argues would help the water shortage situation in the Central Valley. But, so far, none have made it out of Congress.
