Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus has selected a former congresswoman to head the RNC’s site selection committee for its 2016 convention.
Priebus selected Enid Mickelsen, who represented Utah in the House. She served for one term in the mid-1990s.
“Selecting the right city for our 2016 Convention is an important decision that must be made carefully and methodically. I’m confident Enid Mickelsen is the right person to lead the Site Selection Committee in helping the RNC make that decision,” the RNC chairman said in a statement.
{mosads}Mickelson works as Utah’s national committeewoman to the RNC. She previously served as chairwoman of the state’s Republican Party.
“I’m honored to serve as Chairman of the Site Selection Committee,” Mickelsen said in a statement. “I can’t wait to get to work and to explore our options. Ultimately, I know we will find a host city that will make the 2016 convention an exciting time for all involved and a memorable event along our party’s road to the White House.”
Priebus’s decision to name Mickelsen could hint at where the GOP convention will be held in two years. Salt Lake City, in fact, had already expressed interest in hosting the convention.
Kansas City, Mo., and Las Vegas have also lobbied to host the event.
In October, Nevada’s Lt. Gov. Brian Krolicki, announced he would serve as chairman of a group that would push for the convention to be held in Las Vegas. The committee event set up a website for their effort: lasvegas2016.com.
The RNC’s site selection committee is expected to decide on a location this year.
