Grammy award-winning musician Pharrell Williams endorsed Hillary Clinton’s potential 2016 bid for president in an interview with GQ magazine.
{mosads}“We’re about to have a female president. Hillary’s gonna win,” he told the magazine.
Pharrell acknowledged a world where a majority of pop culture and international leaders are women is “a different world,” but expressed confidence that such a time would come.
“A world where 75 percent of the prime ministers and the presidents were women: That’s a different world. That’s gonna happen, and it’s gonna happen when Hillary wins,” he said.
He argued, primarily, that the anti-abortion movement would turn off female voters.
“No matter how staunch of a supporter you are of no-abortion, whatever you are: You’re a woman, and there’s no way in the world you’re going to vote for somebody that’s going to try to tell you what to do with your body,” he said.
President Obama, during both of his races, featured celebrities prominently both in campaign videos and on the campaign trail. Pharrell supported Obama during his 2008 bid by designing a campaign T-shirt for him and has been one of the celebrities out publicizing ObamaCare.
Pharrell hinted that he may have offered Clinton similar campaign support, telling GQ that “I’m reaching out to her right now.” Asked to elaborate, he demurred, only adding “I can’t say but so much.”
And though critics have in recent months raised questions about Clinton’s efficacy as secretary of State, and potential opponents have taken jabs at her husband, Pharrell said he sees both Bill Clinton and her time at State as assets.
“And it’s a two-for-one: Bill is the coolest dude in the game, still plays saxophone, and every woman in the world wants him. It’s a two-for-one,” he said.
“Hillary’s gonna win. Everybody laughed at me when I said Obama was going to win, but I knew what he represented. But I know what Hillary represents: She represents a woman in power, and she did great as the Secretary of State. She’s gonna win.”
Pharrell also had criticism for Tea Party Republicans, suggesting they’ve made hypocritically racist statements in public while they and their daughters enjoy “black” culture — something he said Miley Cyrus has confirmed for him.
“The Tea Party guys? The guys with the n—-r jokes in 2014? They’re all trying to learn how to do the Dougie. Please,” he said.
“While their daughters are all twerking. Trust me: Miley tells me all the time. Not saying that about Billy Ray, but I’m saying Miley tells me all the time: All those little girls, all those girls with their Republican daddies, they’re twerkin’ somewhere listening to Jay Z and Beyoncé and doin’ the ‘Happy’ dance. And that’s black.”
