Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee panned the international deal over Iran’s nuclear program over the weekend, suggesting that President Obama is leading Israel toward destruction.
{mosads}“This president’s foreign policy is the most feckless in American history. It is so naive that he would trust the Iranians. By doing so, he will take the Israelis and march them to the door of the oven,” Huckabee told Breitbart.
Huckabee, a Republican presidential candidate, has long opposed the Obama administration’s overtures toward Iran. Earlier this month he released an ad warning of nuclear catastrophe should Iran get a bomb.
“A threat to Israel is a threat to America,” text in the ad stated, calling on supporters to oppose the nuclear deal.
“This is the most idiotic thing,” Huckabee told Breitbart on Saturday, referring to the recently reached international accord to lift economic sanctions on Iran in exchange for new limits on Tehran’s nuclear program.
“It should be rejected by both Democrats and Republicans in Congress and by the American people. I read the whole deal. We gave away the whole store. It’s got to be stopped,” Huckabee said.
Huckabee currently ranks sixth out of 16 Republican candidates in the RealClearPolitics polling average, ahead of Sens. Ted Cruz (Texas) and Rand Paul (Ky.) as well as New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie.
Democrats on Sunday slammed the comment from Huckabee and called on the candidate to apologize.
“This rhetoric, while commonplace in today’s Republican presidential primary, has no place in American politics,” Democratic National Committee Chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D-Fla.) said in a statement.
“Cavalier analogies to the Holocaust are unacceptable. Mike Huckabee must apologize to the Jewish community and to the American people for this grossly irresponsible statement,” Schultz added.
