Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee (R) predicted Monday that Donald Trump would not hurt his chances at the White House by attacking the Clinton family.
“Nothing’s backfired on Donald Trump yet,” he said on “Fox and Friends.” “My money’s on him.”
{mosads}“I honestly don’t think this is going to hurt Donald Trump,” Huckabee continued. “Every time that somebody tries to attack him, it comes and backfires on them.”
Huckabee’s comments come the same morning that Trump slammed former President Bill Clinton for his “terrible record of women abuse,” capping days of accusations of sexism from both sides.
“I think that the Clintons have some vulnerabilities here that Trump is seizing upon,” Huckabee said, adding that most public figures would harm their own image if they went after the 42nd president.
“He’s still popular with a lot of Americans,” he said. “Frankly, after seven years of Obama, a lot of Republicans would take Bill Clinton back warts and all because at least he understood how to govern.”
Huckabee said the current White House has “demonized the other side legislatively,” but “when Newt Gingrich [R-Ga.] was Speaker of the House, [Clinton] worked with him to get welfare reform.”
“He worked with him on other pieces of legislation that were good for the country. I think that lot of people miss that kind of functional government, which we don’t have now.”
Huckabee then argued that Trump is too media-savvy to hurt his own chances at the Oval Office next year.
“He has played the whole media game, frankly, like a kid on Christmas morning with a toy drum,” he said. “He has beaten the heck out of them.”
Democratic contender Hillary Clinton charged last week that Trump has a “penchant for sexism” in his campaign rhetoric.
The outspoken billionaire shocked listeners last week by claiming Clinton was “schlonged” during her 2008 Democratic presidential primary loss to then-Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.).
