Bernie Sanders is raising his attacks on Hillary Clinton, arguing she hasn’t had a consistent position on gun control.
“People will remember that Secretary Clinton has been all over the map on guns,” Sanders campaign manager Jeff Weaver told host Chris Cuomo on CNN’s “New Day.”
{mosads}“She’s been very conservative on guns, she’s been very liberal on guns,” he said.
Clinton has launched attacks on Sanders’s record on guns, arguing he has not been a strong supporter of gun control. The two candidates are battling for position ahead of the Feb. 1 Iowa caucuses and Feb. 9 New Hampshire primary.
“Democrats have a real chance here to stand up to the gun lobby, and that’s the real difference between Sen. Sanders and Hillary Clinton,” John Podesta, Clinton’s campaign chairman, on Jan. 8.
Weaver said Clinton has backed gun rights in the past and is not as strong on gun control as she suggests.
“People will remember the attacks that she leveled against then-Sen. Barack Obama [D-Ill.], back in 2008, when she was tacking to the right on this,” Weaver said. “I think her argument would be much more compelling if she had a consistent record on this issue. What is happening is you’re seeing the polls, and I think the Clinton campaign is getting very nervous.”
