Fiorina: Haley sounded ‘wrong note’ in SOTU response
Carly Fiorina on Wednesday accused Gov. Nikki Haley (R-S.C.) of sounding the “wrong note” in the GOP response to President Obama’s final State of the Union address.
“I don’t speak for Nikki Haley, and she doesn’t speak for me,” she said on “The Mike Gallagher Show.”
{mosads}“I think that you’re correct that it was the wrong note,” the GOP presidential candidate continued, agreeing with the radio host’s assessment. “You’re exactly right.”
Fiorina argued that Haley did not attack Obama’s record forcibly enough.
“Look, President Obama tried to tell us that everything’s OK, that everything’s getting better,” Fiorina said.
“The vast majority of Americans — Democrats, Republicans, independents — know that things are not OK,” she continued. “History is on the wrong track.
“We have record numbers of men out of work, record numbers of women living in poverty, record numbers of children who don’t think the American dream applies to them.”
Fiorina additionally charged that Haley’s remarks are representative of the GOP’s disappointing immigration reform efforts.
“Let’s be clear — the GOP has an establishment, a political class, just like the DNC has an establishment and a political class,” she said, referencing the Democratic National Committee.
“The political establishment of both parties has been talking about fixing illegal immigration for 25 years, and we have never gotten around to it. It’s why people are ticked off and tired of politics as usual.”
Haley cautioned against divisive politics during the official Republican response to Obama’s last State of the Union Tuesday night. The South Carolina governor also warned against the GOP’s anti-immigration voices.
“My story is really not much different from millions of other Americans,” said Haley, whose parents are Indian immigrants.
“Immigrants have been coming to our shores for generations to live the dream that is America,” she continued.
“No one who is willing to work hard, abide by our laws and love our traditions should ever feel unwelcome in this country.”
Conservative commentary Ann Coulter lambasted Haley’s remarks and called for her deportation.
GOP presidential front-runner Donald Trump, meanwhile, panned Haley as “very weak” on illegal immigration.
