A super-PAC supporting Martin O’Malley’s White House run received $100,000 from former Gov. Eliot Spitzer (D-N.Y.) and his mother.
Generation Forward PAC took in $50,000 apiece from Anne and Eliot Spitzer last September, according to a Friday report from the Federal Election Commission.
{mosads}They made the donations three months before Eliot Spitzer stopped dating Lis Smith, O’Malley’s deputy campaign manager, Politico reported that afternoon.
Generation Forward PAC finished 2015 with $190,000 in savings and $173,000 in debt, the publication said.
It focused its spending mainly on pro-O’Malley ads, it added, but also used $10,000 for Web spots criticizing rival Democratic candidate Bernie Sanders.
Spitzer resigned from New York’s gubernatorial office in 2008 amid allegations he solicited prostitutes. He exited in March of that year before state lawmakers could launch an impeachment bid against him.
The former governor endorsed O’Malley’s presidential campaign during his relationship with Smith, Politico reported.
Spitzer strongly criticized Hillary Clinton in October over her immigration platform. He particularly targeted the Democratic front-runner for her position on drivers’ licenses for illegal immigrants during a 2007 presidential debate.
“She waffled and waffled and waffled,” he said on Oct. 29, according to The New York Times.
“At the time, it was controversial,” Spitzer said of the 2008 election cycle. “And because it was controversial, she hemmed and she hawed.
“This goes to the core of where are you on immigrants rights. I thought the issue was a metaphor for her vacillation.”
O’Malley has struggled for traction with voters since launching his Oval Office bid last year. He trails Clinton by 50 points nationally, according to the latest RealClearPolitics average of polls.
