Donald Trump on Wednesday went after his GOP presidential rival Jeb Bush for dropping his glasses to instead wear contact lenses on the campaign trail ahead of Saturday’s primary in South Carolina.
“Jeb Bush just got contact lenses and got rid of the glasses. He wants to look cool, but it’s far too late. 1% in Nevada!” Trump tweeted.
{mosads}That came after
another tweet in which the outspoken billionaire mocked Bush for securing 1 percent in the latest Nevada
poll from CNN/ORC released Wednesday.
After
vowing in October that he wouldn’t ditch the eyewear, Bush explained in an
interview with NBC News aired Wednesday that he has been trying for a few months to wear contacts for TV interviews.
Still, he insisted that he wasn’t trying to change his public image, telling NBC, “You haven’t seen me veer off. I am authentic. I believe what I believe.”
Trump suggested Wednesday that Bush “take his dumb mouthpiece” — an insult aimed at Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) — “and just go home.”
That came after the businessman offered an
extended riff against the South Carolina lawmaker during a campaign event in the state, suggesting he could”push him over with a little thimble.”
The backlash against Graham came after the senator appeared on television earlier in the day Wednesday and argued that Republicans would get “
slaughtered” in the general election if Trump is the nominee.
