Cruz looking ahead to ‘very good night’ on Super Tuesday
In an interview released early Sunday, Ted Cruz said his GOP presidential campaign is positioned “to have a very good night on Super Tuesday,” calling it the “most important day of the entire primary election.”
{mosads}“You know, about 65 percent of Republicans believe that Donald Trump is not the best candidate to go head-to-head with Hillary Clinton,” the Texas senator said on CBS’s “Face the Nation.” “And we are the only campaign that has beaten Donald Trump. And we’re the only candidate that can beat Donald Trump.”
Cruz said he is running “neck-and-neck” with Trump “in states all across Super Tuesday.”
“It is my hope that all of the Republicans who recognize that nominating a candidate who agrees with Hillary Clinton on a host of issues, who has a very similar record, is not the path to victory,” he added. “And if we come together, if conservatives stand together, we’re going to have a great night on Tuesday.”
Cruz said Trump “may well be unstoppable” if he “steam rolls” through Super Tuesday.
He added, however, that he doesn’t think that will happen.
“I think if you’re at home and you don’t want Donald Trump to be the Republican nominee, then the only candidate who can beat Donald is our campaign,” Cruz said. “I would encourage you, even if you like another candidate, to stand with us if you don’t want Donald to be the nominee. Because if and when we stop him on Super Tuesday, that’s how we end up beating Donald and nominating a proven conservative, which is what it’s going to take to beat Hillary.”
Cruz trails the real estate mogul by almost 13 points nationally, 33.2 percent to 20.3 percent, according to a RealClearPolitics average of national polls. In his home state of Texas, which holds its Republican primary on Tuesday, Cruz tops Trump by approximately 7 points, 34 to 26.8 percent.
