McConnell to meet with Trump Thursday

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) will meet with Donald Trump Thursday morning in an effort to unify the Republican Party behind its presumptive nominee for president.

The meeting is scheduled for 11:45 Thursday morning at the National Republican Senatorial Committee headquarters on 2nd Street NE.

{mosads}It will take place the same day Trump is scheduled to meet with Speaker Paul Ryan (R-Wis.), who has so far withheld his support because of concerns over the candidate’s statements and policy positions.

McConnell last week offered a lukewarm endorsement of Trump, noting the billionaire businessman still has a lot of work to do to mend fences within the party.

McConnell said he is committed to keeping Democrats from controlling the White House for four more years but added that Trump “now has the opportunity and the obligation to unite our party around our goals.”

The Senate leader last year criticized Trump’s proposal to temporarily bar Muslims from entering the country as “totally inconsistent with American values.”
