John Kasich blasted presumptive GOP presidential nominee Donald Trump on Monday for his criticism of a federal judge overseeing fraud cases against his for-profit real estate classes.
“Attacking judges based on their race &/or religion is another tactic that divides our country. More importantly, it is flat out wrong,” the Ohio governor, a former rival of Trump’s in the Republican White House race, tweeted.
“.@RealDonaldTrump should apologize to Judge Curiel & try to unite this country.”
Kasich also included the hashtag “#TwoPaths,” a reference his pledge not to follow Trump’s “low road” to the White House.
Trump has drawn resounding criticism from the left and the right for his comments about Judge Gonzalo Curiel’s Hispanic heritage. He’s
repeatedly accused the Indiana-born judge of being biased because of Trump’s plans to build a wall on the U.S.-Mexican border, and on Sunday he added that a Muslim judge would likely treat him unfairly, too.
Prominent conservatives — including House Speaker Paul Ryan (R-Wis.), Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) and former Speaker Newt Gingrich (R-Ga.) — have spoken out against Trump’s comments.
Democrats have seized on them to say Trump doesn’t respect the rule of law and to criticize him for attacking the judge based solely on his ethnicity.
