Key Dem: Kaine ‘a great choice’ for VP

Rep. Xavier Becerra (D-Calif.) says Sen. Tim Kaine (D-Va.) would be a good option for Hillary Clinton’s running mate.

“I think he’s a great guy, as experienced a guy as you could hope to be president,” Becerra told MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” on Wednesday.

{mosads}“You’re not going to get everything in a package. He would be a great choice. I don’t think there’s any doubt Tim Kaine would be ready to lead.”

Becerra demurred when asked whether he was being considered to join the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee’s ticket.

“I have no knowledge of that, no direct knowledge of any vetting of me or anyone else,” he said. “I think the secretary is going to make a wise choice.

Becerra, who is Hispanic, made reference to the desire of many Democrats to have a Latino on the party’s presidential ticket.

“There are several Latinos that could serve,” he said. “My name has been mentioned but I will leave that as is. At the end of the day, I think she will pick the top person, the best person, to be at her side as president.”

Reports emerged Tuesday that Clinton’s campaign is considering Kaine, Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) and Housing Secretary Julián Castro as possible running mates.

Becerra, Labor Secretary Tom Perez and Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-Ohio) were also mentioned as possibilities.
