Hillary Clinton on Tuesday hit back at Gov. Chris Christie (R-N.J.) after he delivered a fierce speech at the Republican National Convention criticizing her judgment and character.
“If you think Chris Christie can lecture anyone on ethics, we have a bridge to sell you,” Clinton tweeted in response, a reference to the governor’s “Bridgegate” scandal.
{mosads}Clinton’s tweet included a link to a 2015 New York Times article explaining the events surrounding the scandal. Christie has repeatedly taken fire for his role in a September 2013 decision to close lanes along the crowded George Washington Bridge, with critics claiming it was done to punish a political opponent.
The tweet came after Christie blasted Clinton in an address to Republicans in Cleveland, laying out what he called an “indictment” against the presumptive Democratic nominee.
“Since the Justice Department refuses to allow you to render a verdict, let’s present the case now, on the facts, against Hillary Clinton,” he said during his address.
“She was America’s chief diplomat,” Christie added of the former secretary of State. “Look around at the violence and danger in our world today. Every region of the world has been infected with her flawed judgment.”
Christie went on to criticize her handling of numerous foreign policy flashpoints as well as her controversial use of a private email server.
After each example, he asked listeners whether Clinton was guilty or not guilty.
Many delegates responded by chanting “lock her up, lock her up,” while others brandished “Hillary for Prison” signs.
