Gov. Chris Christie (R-N.J.) says Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) should back Donald Trump during his speech Wednesday night at the Republican National Convention.
“I hope Ted Cruz gets up tonight when he speaks tonight and keeps his word, endorses Trump,” he told CNN Wednesday.
{mosads}“He was kissing Donald’s rear end for [the] first six months of the campaign,” Christie, himself a former Republican presidential candidate, added. “They did rallies together on Capitol Hill. Seriously. They don’t realize Donald isn’t a politician. He thought Ted really meant it.”
Cruz has not formally endorsed Trump despite accepting a Wednesday night speaking slot during the convention in Cleveland.
Earlier Wednesday, the senator’s supporters booed when Cruz mentioned Trump at an event.
“In an amazing field of 17 talented, amazing candidates, we beat 15 of those candidates,” Cruz said, referring to the presidential primary. “We just didn’t beat 16. Our party now has a nominee.”
Cruz downplayed rumors he may seek the Oval Office again during the 2020 election.
“I don’t know what the future is going to hold, I don’t know what will happen, but what I do know is my unshakeable faith in the men and women here,” he said. “Every one of us has an obligation to follow our conscience, to speak the truth and truth is unchanging, to defend liberty.
“There’s a lot of talk about unity. I want to see unity and the way to see unity is to unite around shared principles, to unite around liberty, and for us to empower the grassroots.”
