Hillary Clinton’s chief strategist says Donald Trump’s response to the separation of top Clinton aide Huma Abedin and former Rep. Anthony Weiner (D-N.Y.) shows how egotistical the Republican presidential nominee is.
{mosads}”He thinks everything is about him, his political opportunism,” Joel Benenson said Tuesday on CNN’s “New Day.”
“It shows why the man is temperamentally unfit to be president of the United States.”
After Abedin announced Monday that she was separating from Weiner, her husband, Trump
issued a statement saying Abedin is making a “very wise decision” and slamming Clinton, the Democratic presidential nominee.
“I only worry for the country in that Hillary Clinton was careless and negligent in allowing Weiner to have such close proximity to highly classified information,” he said in the statement.
“Who knows what he learned and who he told? It’s just another example of Hillary Clinton’s bad judgment. It is possible that our country and its security have been greatly compromised by this.”
Benenson called the separation a “painful, private situation for Huma Abedin and her son.”
“And anybody who’s been through any marital separation knows that that is a difficult process in a divorce,” he said. “Here they’ve got to do it in public, and we should leave it private for these folks.”
He called Trump’s statement “another one of the outlandish things this man tosses about.”
Benenson cited an “incredibly insensitive tweet” sent out by the GOP nominee this past weekend about the death of basketball star Dwyane Wade’s cousin, who was caught in crossfire and shot in the head and arm while leaving a school in Chicago.
“Dwayne [sic] Wade’s cousin was just shot and killed walking her baby in Chicago. Just what I have been saying. African-Americans will VOTE TRUMP!” Trump tweeted over the weekend.
Benenson said Trump “tries to take credit for these things.”
“He did it after Orlando. He did it after this tragedy in Chicago last week,” Benenson said.
“This is what he does.”
