Democratic strategist David Axelrod wants Hillary Clinton to focus on transparency, saying her “vulnerability is not health, it’s stealth.”
{mosads}“What she did, I think, in trying to navigate through questions about her health, she created more questions on the other side, which is really a greater vulnerability,” he told hosts Alisyn Camerota and Chris Cuomo on CNN’s “New Day” Wednesday. “From my standpoint, I said it was ill-considered, and I said so.”
Videos emerged last Sunday showing Clinton stumbling as she left a 9/11 memorial early after feeling “overheated.”
Clinton’s doctor then disclosed later that evening the Democratic presidential nominee was diagnosed with pneumonia last Friday.
Axelrod on Monday tweeted that Clinton has an “unhealthy penchant for privacy that repeatedly creates unnecessary problems.”
On Wednesday, he said Clinton’s illness will not slow her down.
“First of all, let me say on her health, I’ve seen her close up as an opponent when I was working for Barack Obama in 2008,” said Axelrod, a chief strategist for both of Obama’s presidential campaigns.
“As someone who worked side-by-side with her in earlier years and when she was secretary of State, she is a relentless, indefatigable, tenacious human being,” added Axelrod, who also served as a White House senior adviser to Obama.
“I have no doubt about that. And so I’ll suspect she’ll come back on the campaign trail … full of piss and vinegar, as the expression goes.”
Some of Clinton’s allies worry her penchant for privacy may fuel conspiracy theories about her physical condition.
Donald Trump, the GOP’s presidential nominee, has frequently accused Clinton of lacking the strength and stamina for the Oval Office.
