Kaine leaves campaign trail for VP debate prep

Sen. Tim Kaine (D-Va.) is heading to Raleigh, N.C. to prepare for next week’s vice presidential debate, CNN reported.

{mosads}Kaine, Hillary Clinton’s running mate, is taking a break from the campaign trail to prepare for the debate with a team of campaign aides and advisers.

Lawyer and agent Bob Barnett is reportedly playing Indiana Gov. Mike Pence, Kaine’s Republican opponent, in the Virginia senator’s debate preparations.

“He’s an attorney who kind of makes a specialty in prepping the VP contender in Democratic presidential elections going back many, many years. So he’s done a lot of this and he is extremely tough,” Kaine told reporters aboard his campaign plane last week, according to the cable network.

Kaine said the vice presidential debate likely won’t be like the debates he has done in the past.

“It’s a different kind of a debate,” he said.

“If I talk too much about Tim Kaine during my debate, I’m wasting my time. It would not be a good way to use of my time.”

It will be about “two visions for the country,” Kaine said.

“And it’s about a Clinton presidency or a Trump presidency.”

“I am not the main event, so I’m in an in-between space. And I’ve not done that before, obviously. It’s a unique kind of a debate,” Kaine said, according to CNN.

Kaine said he also needs to focus on both Pence’s record and what the Indiana governor’s record “would say about the guy who chose him.”

“Since it really is more about Donald Trump than it is about Gov. Pence,” Kaine said.

The Virginia senator has hit Pence on the campaign trail in the past, slamming him for his positions on marriage equality and climate change.

The vice presidential debate will be held Oct. 4 at Longwood University in Farmville, Va.
