Aide: Trump ‘gracious’ for not mentioning Bill Clinton infidelities
Donald Trump’s campaign manager described the GOP nominee as “gracious” during the first presidential debate by not diving into Bill Clinton’s past marital infidelities.
“I think he’s gotten very little credit, Megyn, for how gracious he was at the beginning and the end of the debate,” Kellyanne Conway told host Megyn Kelly on Fox News’s “The Kelly File” late Wednesday.
{mosads}“At the very beginning, nobody is covering this, he actually said, ‘Secretary Clinton,’ and then he looked over and he said, ‘May I call you Secretary Clinton? I want you to be happy. It’s very important to me,'” she added.
“At the end of the debate, after she tried to rough him up over a couple comments he’s made over 25 years or so with respect to women, he said, ‘You know, I came prepared to say some rough stuff but I won’t do it because your family is here and your daughter is here. But it is not nice that you are running hundreds of millions of dollars in negative ads against me,’ and he has a point.”
Clinton and Trump met in their first of three presidential debates last Monday at Hofstra University in Hempstead, N.Y.
Trump asked Clinton, the Democratic nominee, whether he could address her by her previous title of secretary of State early in the contest.
The billionaire also implied after the debate he did not attack former President Bill Clinton’s personal conduct due to Chelsea Clinton’s presence at the event.
“Her husband was in the room, along with her daughter, who I think is a very nice lady,” Trump said on Fox News’s “Hannity” late Monday.
“I didn’t want to say what I was going to say about what was going on in their life, so I decided not to say it. I thought it would be very disrespectful to Chelsea and the family. But she said very bad things about me.”
Trump said during his first campaign rally after the event that he was “holding back” on Clinton the night before.
