GOP lawmaker: Illegal for Clinton to ‘indicate’ she’ll keep AG Lynch

Rep. Louie Gohmert (R-Texas) on Monday said it is illegal for Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton to indicate she wants Attorney General Loretta Lynch to remain in the position if she becomes president.

{mosads}”Friends close to Hillary Clinton say she wants Loretta Lynch to stay on as attorney general,” Gohmert, who is supporting Republican nominee Donald Trump, said during an interview on “Fox and Friends.”

“If Hillary even indirectly indicates that she would want her to stay on as attorney general, it’s a crime.”

Lynch came under fire in June after she met with former President Bill Clinton, a meeting that fueled criticism of the Justice Department’s investigation into Hillary Clinton’s use of a private email server while serving as secretary of State.

The meeting stirred speculation about what might have been discussed by the former president and the nation’s top law enforcement officer.

Trump in July accused Clinton of tying to bribe the attorney general by claiming Clinton had announced she would keep Lynch in the position if she was elected to the White House.

On Saturday, a report surfaced that Lynch had advised FBI Director James Comey not to send a letter to Congress informing them of the discovery of new emails it says are “pertinent” to its investigation into Clinton’s private server.

Lynch reportedly argued for following the Justice Department’s practice of not taking actions that could influence the outcome of an election.

The release of Comey’s letter has since sparked a political firestorm just about a week before Election Day.
