Speaker Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) says FBI Director James Comey should make public any new information the agency learns regarding Hillary Clinton’s private server.
{mosads}”I think if he’s gone through the process that he needs to go through to vet evidence, and he’s got it, he should do it,” Ryan told conservative talk radio host Hugh Hewitt on Wednesday morning.
“More disclosure is better, clearly.”
Ryan said Clinton has only herself to blame for the FBI’s announcement Friday that it discovered new emails that may be “pertinent” to its investigation into Clinton’s private server and whether the former secretary of State mishandled classified information.
“Hillary Clinton has no one to blame but herself, and she and Republicans are saying if you’ve got something you’ve got cleared, put it out there,” said Ryan.
The emails were reportedly found during a separate FBI investigation into former Rep. Anthony Weiner (D-N.Y.), the estranged husband of top Clinton aide Huma Abedin.
Critics say Comey’s letter to Congress alerting them of the emails goes against the Justice Department practice not to take steps in an investigation that could affect an election.
Ryan defended Comey’s action to send the letter to Congress just days before the election.
“I understand why he did what he did, because imagine if he didn’t, and we found out after the fact that he was sitting on this before the election,” he said.
