Tim Kaine rallies Latino voters with speech in Spanish

Hillary Clinton’s running mate, Tim Kaine, delivered a campaign speech entirely in Spanish at a rally in Phoenix Tuesday. 

{mosads}The speech was first of its kind, the campaign said, and was geared toward a growing Latino population in the traditionally Republican state.

During his speech, Kaine said that he felt it was important to reach out to the Hispanic community in their native language.

“With so much at stake for the Hispanic community, it just makes sense to make the case for our campaign in a language that’s spoken by so many families across the country,” he said, according to translated prepared remarks.

“I don’t speak Spanish perfectly. But I picked up what I could while working with Jesuit missionaries in Honduras. I took the skills I learned as a boy, working in my father’s ironworking shop, and I put them to use in the village of El Progreso, teaching young people carpentry and metalwork,” he added.
 
Clinton’s running mate then went on to discuss issues that are facing the country and the Hispanic community.
 
Despite being a traditionally Republican state, Arizona is up for grabs on Election Day, with Clinton leading Trump by less than 1 point on average.
