Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) quickly praised Donald Trump’s surprise White House win early Wednesday, calling it “an amazing victory for the American worker.”
“This was a change election,” Cruz said in a Facebook post. “Americans voted for Republicans because of a promise to go to Washington to reverse our current course, and end the Washington cartel — a promise to drain the swamp.”
{mosads}Cruz added that Trump’s victory “affirms what we have long known, that Americans have resoundingly rejected the Obama-Clinton agenda of bigger government, intrusive regulation, executive overreach, and lawlessness that is killing innovation and jobs.”
Cruz, who has been widely expected to make another White House run, slowly pivoted to supporting Trump after a bitter presidential primary fight.
Cruz refused to endorse the businessman during a speech at the Republican National Convention in July but reversed course in late September after his stance sparked talk of a tough 2018 primary challenge.
The Texas Republican announced earlier this month that he had voted for Trump and stumped with Trump’s running mate, Mike Pence.
Cruz added Wednesday morning that he would work with his Senate colleagues to “pass the conservative agenda that President-elect Trump promised to the American people” including repealing ObamaCare and passing tougher immigration laws.
“I look forward to working with the new administration to confirm conservative justices from the strong list of 21 jurists that was promised,” he said. “I look forward to working with the new administration to repeal Obamacare, to once and for all secure the border and enforce our immigration laws, and to take action that will rebuild our military and stop radical Islamic terrorists from infiltrating our homeland.”
Republicans will keep control of the Senate next year, with top lawmakers — including Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) — rushing to congratulate the real estate mogul.
