GOP senator wrote in Paul Ryan for president
Sen. Susan Collins wrote in House Speaker Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) for president.
An aide confirmed the Maine Republican’s pick, noting it was “important for her to chose a senior elected Republican official who was already in the line of succession for the presidency.”
{mosads}”Senator Collins was impressed with how Speaker Ryan conducted himself as the Republican Party’s Vice Presidential candidate in 2012, and while they do not agree on everything, she believes he has substantive and creative policy ideas for how to address many of our nation’s challenges, including poverty,” the aide added.
NBC News also reported Collins’ choice.
Collins announced in early August that she couldn’t support Trump, citing his string of controversial comments.
“This is not a decision I make lightly, for I am a lifelong Republican. But Donald Trump does not reflect historical Republican values nor the inclusive approach to governing that is critical to healing the divisions in our country,” she said at the time.
But Collins offered on olive branch to Trump on Wednesday morning, saying “I congratulate him on his victory” and pledging to work with him.
“He faces the important task of reaching out to all Americans, supporters and opponents alike, to show that he is committed to healing the deep divisions that have frayed the social fabric of our nation,” she said in a statement. “My hope is that President-elect Trump will focus on issues that unite us and that together we can usher in an era of accomplishment. I pledge to work with him in that effort.”
