“I love being attorney general,” he said, according to the Omaha World-Herald. “I’m having a great time doing a job that I love.”
{mosads}Bruning did say, however, that he would “never say never” about a gubernatorial or Senate bid, but he added that running for either office is “extremely unlikely.”
He did pursue retired Sen. Ben Nelson’s (D) seat in 2012, but lost the Republican nomination to Deb Fischer, who went on to win the seat. Bruning was initially considered a potential contender in 2014, for retiring Sen. Mike Johanns’ (R) seat.
All eyes remain on Gov. Dave Heineman (R), who has expressed interest in running and, sources say, the field will remain frozen until he makes his decision.
A number of other potential contenders have expressed their interest in the race, including Reps. Jeff Fortenberry, Adrian Smith and Lee Terry. State Treasurer Don Stenberg and businessman Pete Ricketts could also run.
