A source close to Facebook chief operating officer Sheryl Sandberg rejected a report on Monday that said she would challenge Democratic incumbent Sen. Barbara Boxer (Calif.) in 2016.
{mosads}The source told Business Insider that a report published by the Daily Mail “is 100 percent untrue.”
The British newspaper reported on Monday that Sandberg would “likely” run in a primary against Boxer, who is serving her fourth term in the Senate. Boxer won’t be up for reelection until 2016.
Sandberg, a billionaire, joined Facebook in 2007 after working at Google. She has suggested politics might not be for her.
In January, she was asked at the World Economic Forum “is politics for you?”
“Not for me,” she said. “I just have a wholesale agreement that we need more women in politics.”
In an interview with “60 Minutes” last May, Sandberg talked about her provocative book “Lean In,” in which she says women shouldn’t hold themselves back professionally. She said it bothered her there hasn’t been a female president yet.
Asked if she would run, Sandberg said, “I mean, for me, I feel like I’m doing all the leaning in that I can do right now.”
