Trio of GOP ads hammer Udall in Colo.
Two ads this week take aim at Sen. Mark Udall (D-Colo.) for his support of Obamacare and a third, a Spanish-language ad, highlights his vote against the Keystone XL oil pipeline.
Americans for Prosperity’s newest ad, released Wednesday in a $500,000 broadcast buy airing for the next two weeks, accuses Udall of “covering up for ObamaCare.”
{mosads}”The Affordable Care Act has become unaffordable. Our healthcare costs are still going up and 335,000 Coloradans received a cancellation notice,” the 30-second ad notes. The group released a similar ad in April.
That’s on the heels of a 30-second ad released Monday by Udall’s challenger in the close race, Rep. Cory Gardner (R-Colo.), which tries to tie Udall to President Obama’s claim that those who like their healthcare plan could keep it.
“When Mark Udall voted for ObamaCare, he promised us, if we liked our healthcare plan we could keep it. Well you know how that worked out,” Gardner says in the ad, including the 335,000 figure. “More cancellations are on the way.”
Democrats have said that the vast majority of those 335,000 were offered early renewal.
The percentage of uninsured Coloradans has dropped six points – from 17 to 11 percent – since the law’s insurance mandate went into effect this year, according to the most recent Gallup poll, making it the fifth largest drop of any state.
“The Affordable Care Act had a rough start, and that’s inexcusable. We must fight to make it work for Colorado, and Mark has done just that,” Udall campaign spokeswoman Kristin Lynch said in a statement to The Hill.
“Congressman Gardner, on the other hand, has voted 50 times to go back to a time when insurance companies could jack up your rates, cut your coverage, pocket your cash and then drop you if you got sick,” she added.
Last week an ad from a different group hitting Udall on ObamaCare raised questions about the subject’s actual experience after the law was enacted.
In a third ad this week, a 30-second Spanish-language ad released Tuesday, the National Republican Senatorial Campaign hits Udall for voting against the Keystone pipeline. The ad says that Udall’s energy policies hurt jobs and working-class Colorado families.
