The Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee has launched a new 30-second spot on Colorado airwaves attacking Rep. Cory Gardner (R) for supporting amendments to restrict abortion rights.
The ad, which will air over the next two weeks, accuses Gardner of backing amendments that would ban abortions even in cases of rape and incest.
{mosads}“Why do guys like Cory Gardner think it’s their business to tell women what to do?” asks one woman in the ad. Another calls him “way too extreme for Colorado.”
The first DSCC-sponsored ad to run this election cycle, it cost the group $1 million.
“Congressman Gardner’s record of backing measures to take women’s healthcare decisions away is simply too extreme for Colorado,” said Justin Barasky, a Democratic spokesman. “Until Election Day, the DSCC will continue to highlight how Congressman Gardner is completely wrong for Colorado women, seniors and middle class families.”
Gardner is squaring off against Sen. Mark Udall (D) in one of the most watched Senate races this midterm. If Gardner wins, it would bring Republicans five seats short of taking control of the Senate, and thus both chambers of Congress.
Democrats have been using abortion rights and access to birth control as lightning rod issues in their narrative of a “war on women.” They predict the narrative will draw women voters who will vote for vulnerable Senate Democrats in November.
However, Gardner is fighting back against the narrative and recently suggested birth control products should be available over the counter without a prescription.
