Senate races

Burr will run for reelection

Sen. Richard Burr (R-N.C.) says he is planning to run for reelection, ending speculation based on his slow fundraising that he might be considering retirement.

{mosads}”I judge whether I run based upon whether I’ve got something to contribute,” Burr tells WNCN. “I still have a lot to contribute to representing North Carolina in the United States Senate.”

Burr is viewed as potentially vulnerable in North Carolina, which still leans Republican but has trended Democratic in recent years due to demographic change.

The two-term senator had just $700,000 in the bank as of the end of September.

Democrats are trying to convince former Sen. Kay Hagan (D-N.C.), who lost a tough fight in 2014, to jump in against him. If they can land her, the fight could be a marquee battle, as Democrats aim to retake Senate control.
