Sen. Richard Burr (R-N.C.) raised more than $1 million in one night, his first major fundraiser of the cycle and a strong signal he’s running for reelection.

{mosads}The huge fundraising haul, reported by the Raleigh News & Observer, is the latest sign he’s serious about winning in 2016.

Burr had just over $700,000 in his campaign account as of the end of last year, leading some to speculate he was considering retirement. But he’s said he’s running and recently announced senior staff for his campaign.

The reelection will likely be a costly one. Sen. Thom Tillis (R-N.C.) and then-Sen. Kay Hagan (D-N.C.), combined with outside groups, spent more than $110 million in North Carolina last year, and the state’s TV airtime will likely be even more costly next time around because of the presidential race.

Democrats are hoping they can convince Hagan to run against Burr.
