Crist endorses Murphy for Florida Senate
Former Florida Gov. Charlie Crist (D) on Wednesday endorsed Rep. Patrick Murphy (D) for Florida Senate in 2016.
“Congressman Murphy will bring refreshing energy, integrity, and work ethic to the United States Senate,” Crist said in a statement. “He knows it’s all about the people — that’s why I know Floridians will join me in volunteering for and supporting Patrick early.”
Crist had been considering another Senate run of his own, but stepped aside earlier this month.
{mosads}Murphy announced on Monday that he would run for Sen. Marco Rubio’s (R) seat. Rubio appears to be gearing up for a presidential run and has said he won’t seek the White House and reelection to the Senate simultaneously.
Crist’s endorsement is indicative of the kind of establishment support Murphy is expected to receive. Murphy has been meeting with donors and party officials in Florida who have been pushing him to run for months.
“Governor Crist is a champion for the middle class, a loyal Democrat, and a close friend,” Murphy said in a statement. “I am so grateful to him for his early support of this campaign, and look forward to continue working with him in the weeks and months ahead to fight for all Floridians in the United States Senate.”
But Rep. Alan Grayson (D-Fla.) could emerge as a primary challenger to Murphy from the left if he decides to enter the field.
Grayson has a strong base of grassroots donors and has built a substantial national profile as a liberal firebrand and agitator of the right.
